Influence and inspiration
Tell us about a leadership lesson that you’ve learnt that’s unique to being a female leader?
Focusing on the balance between a relationship-oriented and result-oriented leadership style. The challenge of leadership (I believe not only applies to being a female leader) is how to balance between these two styles. Result-oriented leaders focus on outcome and deadline. While, relationship-oriented leaders focus on people and their fulfillment at work. Finding the balance is key to motivating creativity and bringing out the best qualities in our team members, which eventually leads to increased productivity.
Have you drawn professional inspiration from other women? Tell us about someone who has inspired you.
Yes, in fact my manager at my first, second and third jobs were female leaders. They led by example and provided me a safe space to make mistakes. It is through these mistakes that I have improved and learned to become a better employee, eventually bringing me to where I am now.
What energises you about work?
The people I work with, I truly enjoy working with my team members. Also, the culture of the company is equally important to me.
What advice would you give to the next generation of female leaders?
Be clear of your own goals and be courageous to reach for it. Aside from my advice, I am also inspired by the African proverb that says “If you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together”. This applies to my work and personal life. At work, I believe in finding the most workable solution with my team. In my personal life, despite my commitment as a female professional, I am not forgetting my other role as a nurturing mother, caring wife, a daughter, and also a sister.
How has FSMK empowered you to #breakthebias and be the leader you are today?
The flexible working arrangements allow me to better manage my life between working and taking care of my family. The company recognises that it’s not easy being a working mother, and the flexibility they give in working from home helps me to juggle my commitments better, eventually supporting my productivity at work.
How should women support other women in their organisations?
Create a safe community where women can communicate their experience, ask for advice or simply share their daily life stories.

What has been the biggest takeaway for you from FSMK’s #makingHERstory – Women in Leadership program?
2 biggest takeaways for me are firstly to have the self-confidence to take risks when we need to, and to know that we have the ability to ride through all challenges. Secondly, networking is important in elevating our career. It’s helpful to establish this daily practice not just for when we need certain favours. We never know when the networking will be fruitful, but eventually it will be.
